Why Cole Palmer faces a lawsuit over his nickname

Palmer’s move has hit resistance from Château Palmer, a vineyard based in Bordeaux with more than two centuries of history.

The estate, which dates back to 1814 when British Army officer Charles Palmer took over the land and renamed it, believes the Chelsea man’s application could clash with their established reputation.

The footballer’s bid goes beyond simple branding.

According to The Sun, his submission included plans to use Cold Palmer on products ranging from clothes and toiletries to alcoholic beverages.

His paperwork listed “alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks” among others.

That part of the request immediately drew the attention of the French winemakers, who are determined to defend their name.

With the French vineyard formally objecting, the matter will now be decided by the government’s Intellectual Property Office.

Lawyers from both sides are expected to present their arguments before a ruling is made.

For Château Palmer, protecting their legacy is key, with bottles of their prized Cru Classé Margaux from 1970 reportedly valued at £750 (GHS 11,040.47).

The youngster has already left his mark at Stamford Bridge, playing a crucial role in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs last season.

Enzo Maresca’s side are hoping for momentum after a frustrating draw with Crystal Palace, who themselves upset Manchester City in the FA Cup and beat Liverpool to lift the Community Shield.

For Palmer, the legal battle may take time to resolve, but his immediate concern is helping Chelsea push forward in another tough London derby.
