Two Footballers Die in Horrific Tunnel Crash, Another Team-Mate Hospitalised

Two 19-year-old footballers have died in a tragic tunnel crash that also left their teammate critically injured.

Danilo Boz and Fabio Rosa played for ASD Calcio Maniago Vajont in Italy’s sixth-tier Promozione league.

The duo were killed instantly from their injuries after the collision, which occurred while travelling home from training.

The pair were travelling with teammate Andrea Zoccoletto, who was behind the wheel and was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Two footballers killed in tunnel car crash

The players were on their way back to their hometown of Maniago in northern Italy after a training session in nearby Poffabro when the accident occurred.

Daily Star reports indicate that Zoccoletto lost control of their Renault Twingo while entering the Bus del Colvera tunnel, swerving into the opposite lane.

The vehicle collided head-on with a Volkswagen Tiguan driven by a 72-year-old woman, who was also taken to hospital. Her condition remains unknown.

The force of the impact sent the passenger side of the Twingo crashing into the tunnel wall, causing part of it to collapse.

The Bus del Colvera tunnel, which runs from Frisanco to Maniago, spans roughly one kilometre, according to NeedToKnow.

Boz, Rosa, and Zoccoletto were reportedly close friends who had only just reunited for training after the summer break.

Club mourns death of two players

In the wake of the tragedy, ASD Calcio Maniago Vajont announced the suspension of all sporting activities until further notice.

The club said via Express Football:

“We are shocked by the tragic passing of Danilo and Fabio.

“We are close to their families and loved ones at this time for this unimaginable loss, and we will continue to provide them with our full support.
“All Calcio Maniago Vajont activities are currently suspended until further notice.”

The accident is still under investigation.

Diogo Jota and brother killed in car crash

This tragedy comes barely a month after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, lost their lives in a similar incident while returning to the UK from Spain.

According to Sky Sports, the fatal crash occurred on July 7, 2025, when the Lamborghini they were travelling in suffered a tyre blowout, veered off the road, and burst into flames.

CNN reported that the brothers were driving through Spain’s Zamora province, heading to Santander to catch an overnight ferry to Britain.

Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, having been together since he was 16.
