How Ghana won bronze at the 2024 WAFCON
Ghana’s journey to the bronze medal was nothing short of a remarkable comeback. After failing to qualify for the continental showpiece since 2018, the senior women's national team returned stronger and with renewed purpose.
Their road to Morocco was paved with uncertainty. Before the tournament began, not many gave them a chance. Their long absence from the competition, coupled with the departure of Swiss coach Nora Hauptle, left many sceptical.

But under the guidance of Swedish coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, the Queens turned doubt into belief. The tournament started on a rough note. Ghana lost their opening game to South Africa and followed that with a frustrating draw against Mali.
A convincing win over Tanzania secured their passage to the knockout stage. From there, they found their rhythm.
Against Algeria in the quarter-finals, they held their nerves and advanced through a tense penalty shootout, as noted by CAF Online. Although they stumbled against hosts Morocco in the semi-final, their fighting spirit never waned.
According to ESPN, they bounced back in the third-place play-off, beating South Africa again on penalties to claim the bronze medal.
Black Queens cash out after WAFCON success
Their podium finish, Ghana’s best since 2016, came with a $350,000 cash prize from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
While details of the team’s official bonuses remain unclear, the donation from the Minority Caucus adds another layer of encouragement.
The players returned home on Monday to a warm and celebratory welcome. As part of their post-tournament engagements, they visited the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.
They are also expected to dine with Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang before paying a courtesy call on President John Mahama.
"Applause to the Minority Caucus in Parliament for acknowledging the Black Queens' efforts, but it shouldn't stop at just recognition. What we need is a well-structured reward system, backed by consistent support, to ensure their qualification and preparation processes are seamless. That’s how we’ll get the right results in future tournaments," Stephen Zando of Luv FM told YEN.com.gh.
