Tamale Central: NDC Sets Date for Primaries Ahead of By-Election, Pegs Filing Fee at GH¢40k

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has set Saturday, September 6, 2025, for its parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central Constituency ahead of the forthcoming by-election.

This announcement follows the Electoral Commission's (EC) declaration on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, that a by-election will be held in the Tamale Central Constituency on September 30, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

A statement signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, outlined the guidelines for the primaries.

According to the statement, prospective aspirants must pay GH¢5,000 for forms and GH¢40,000 as a filing fee, though women and persons with disabilities will enjoy a 50 per cent reduction.

Per the timetable released by the NDC, nominations will open on August 21, 2025, and close on August 23, 2025, with vetting set for August 26.

The final list of approved aspirants will be published on August 27, ahead of the primaries scheduled for September 6.

Candidates for the NDC Tamale Central primaries

The race for the Tamale Central seat is heating up, with some prominent names being circulated as possible candidates for the by-election.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Dr Seidu Mohammed, a mentee of the late Dr Murtala Mohammed, officially declared his intention to contest the NDC's primary for the Tamale Central seat.

Dr Mohammed, popularly known as Seidu Fiter, is a medical laboratory scientist and Assistant Lecturer at the University for Development Studies.

In a Facebook post announcing his bid, he highlighted his contributions to the NDC and emphasised his commitment to serving the people of Tamale Central and upholding the legacy of the late MP.

An Associate Professor and Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana, Prof. Seidu Alidu, is also rumoured to be interested in the Tamale Central seat.

Prof. Alidu was recently appointed by President John Mahama to serve as the Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission (WRC).

Another name being mentioned on social media as a possible candidate for the Tamale Central seat is Farihan Alhassan, who is said to be a close friend of the late Dr Murtala Mohammed.

Farihan Alhassan currently serves as the managing director (MD) of GCB Bank PLC following his appointment by President Mahama in January 2025.

NPP withdraws from Tamale Central by-election

In a related development, YEN.com.gh reported that the NPP announced that it would not field a candidate in the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election.

The NPP reportedly reached this decision following a National Steering Committee meeting on August 11.

In a statement, the party explained that it had considered the circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat became vacant.
