Muntaka Mubarak Shares How Dr Omane Boamah’s First Helicopter Trip Became His Last

A devastating helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Reacting to this unfortunate incident in an interview with Joy FM on Monday, August 11, 2025, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, said that Dr Omane Boamah never liked boarding a helicopter and that it was the first time in their seven months in office he had decided to use one.

"Dr Omane Boamah never liked boarding a helicopter, and this was the first time in our seven months in office that he decided to board one. And he kept warning me because I used it most frequently," he said.
He explained that Dr Omane Boamah often warned him because he used helicopters frequently.
"If you go and check the Ghana Armed Forces records, probably myself, Haruna Iddrisu, Mahama Ayariga, and a few others might have used the helicopter more than any other group. This is because anytime there was something that needed to be done quickly, we thought the easiest option was to go by helicopter, as most of the areas do not have airports," he continued.

"The week before this incident, on a Saturday, we were there, and then there was something urgent to be done in Tamale. The President asked me to go and do it, so I called the Air Force Commander to prepare the helicopter for me to travel to Tamale and return," he further stated.
Describing his interaction with the late Defence Minister, he continued:
"Usually, when we do these things, we have to talk to the minister, who will put it in writing for the records to show that we used it. So when I called him, he said, ‘You, Muntaka, why do you like using this thing? I told you that I’m not comfortable with it, ooo. Why don’t you use the Casa? The Casa is available'. But I said, ‘We are only two people, and you are saying we should use the Casa, which takes over 40 people. I see it as a waste'," he added.
"Then he said, ‘Muntaka, your safety is more important than this cost that you are thinking about. So I’m going to call them to instruct them to change the helicopter to the Casa'," he concluded.

Other victims of the helicopter crash
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that a military helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025, carrying some Ministers of State.
Ghana's Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and several others were confirmed dead.
Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former NDC MP candidate, Samuel Aboagye, also perished.
