The country has been sent into a state of mourning after a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed at the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi South District in the Ashanti Region.

The unfortunate accident claimed the lives of eight individuals who were attending the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi.

Among the numerous victims were two cabinet ministers, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The other government officials who died in the tragic helicopter crash were the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, a Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Sarpong, and the Former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye.

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, officers from the Ghana Armed Forces, also tragically perished in the helicopter crash.

Sammy Gyamfi swerved the Obuasi helicopter crash

According to reports, the GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, was initially scheduled to be part of the government's delegation that boarded the helicopter involved in the unfortunate crash.

However, the NDC National Communications Officer was unable to attend the event in Obuasi due to other commitments elsewhere.

Reports indicate that Sammy Gyamfi was supposed to be on the Z-9 Ghana Armed Forces helicopter with Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah.

Speaking on Metro TV Ghana's Good Morning Ghana show on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) CEO, Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer confirmed the reports.

He also detailed the events that transpired before Dr Omane Boamah and his colleagues boarded the Z-9 helicopter for the event in Obuasi.

Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer also shared that the helicopter was expected to return to Accra and pick up a second delegation to the event.

Ato Forson pulled Muntaka from Obuasi flight

Following the fatal crash, reports emerged that the Interior Minister, Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, was initially scheduled to be part of the delegation that boarded the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter.

However, the Minister is said to have missed the helicopter trip because he failed to arrive at the pick-up point on time.

Deputy Director General at the National Sports Authority (NSA), Donkor Fuseni, shared that Dr Cassiel Ato Forson stopped Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka from travelling with the victims of the crash at the last minute.

According to him, the Interior Minister was scheduled to be the fifth person in the helicopter before he was dragged out of the flight by Ato Forson for an important meeting.

Donkor Fuseni added that the late Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who was not initially supposed to travel in the helicopter, replaced Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka in the delegation bound for Obuasi.

Pastor explains why Mahama did not travel

In another story reported by YEN.com.gh, the Assemblies of God pastor explained why President John Dramani Mahama did not travel with the victims who perished in the helicopter crash in Obuasi.

In a viral video, Reverend Dr. Stephen Y. Wengam noted that the president had initially planned on skipping his church service for the Independence Day celebrations in the Ivory Coast.

The pastor also spoke about the role First Lady Mrs Lordina Mahama played in convincing the president to change his travel plans.
