A military helicopter, identified as a Z-9, crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, reportedly involving some Ministers of State.

Ghana's Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and several others have been confirmed dead.

Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, Former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Former NDC Parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye, also perish in the helicopter crash.

The crew members who also lost their lives are Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

This unfortunate incident was confirmed at an emergency press conference by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, at the Jubilee House, Ghana's seat of government.

The helicopter was en route to Obuasi when contact was lost shortly after taking off from Accra at 9:12 a.m.

A statement released by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) indicates that the helicopter had three crew members and five passengers on board.

While there are initial reports of some passengers being burnt, the GAF has not confirmed any fatalities.

GAF said efforts are underway to establish contact with the missing helicopter and determine the cause of the crash.

The GAF has assured the public that they are working to secure the site and investigate the incident.

According to initial reports, the high-ranking government officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar.

Emergency response teams rushed to the crash site following the incident. Graphic footage and images obtained by Citi News showed the charred remains of several victims, though officials have yet to release a full list of the deceased or injured.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, who was attending an anti-illegal mining event at the time, reportedly abandoned the programme and rushed to the crash scene upon receiving the news.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, and authorities have yet to confirm further details.

This incident comes more than a year after a previous helicopter accident on March 19, 2024, when a military aircraft crash-landed near Bonsukrom in the Western Region. Fortunately, that earlier crash resulted in no fatalities.

Apostle Okai urges unity in trying moments

Reacting to this in a discussion with YEN.com.gh, Apostle Eric Okai, senior pastor at the Elim Church in Accra, acknowledged the tragic loss of lives.

He prayed that God would grant the departed souls eternal rest and urged the families, friends, and colleagues who had lost loved ones to find comfort in God's presence during this difficult time.

Apostle Okai also called on the nation to come together in prayer and support for one another, wishing God's blessings and protection upon Ghana.

"My dear brothers and sisters, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the tragic loss of lives, including our esteemed Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and the remaining departed souls," he said.
"May God grant them eternal rest. To the families, friends, and colleagues who've lost loved ones, may you find comfort in God's presence during this difficult time. As a nation, let's come together in prayer and support for one another. May God bless and protect Ghana," he added.

Prophet’s dire warning to late Defence Minister

Meanhwile, YEN.com.gh reported that a Ghanaian prophet, Roja, shot to prominence after his prophecy concerning the Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, surfaced online.

In a video shared on his official TikTok page around 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Ghanaian preacher Roja, also known as the Dangerous Prophet, issued a warning to the late minister.

Prophet Roja could be heard in the video asking for the identity of Ghana’s defence minister, whom he warned should call him urgently.
