The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Akwatia died on Monday, July 7, 2025.

He had gone on a trip the previous day and returned early in the morning when he fell ill.

According to his brother, Kumi complained of chest pains and was consequently rushed to the Lister Hospital in Accra. He died shortly after arrival at the hospital, as all attempts to save him proved futile.

The politician died of heart failure, according to a statement read on the floor of Parliament on behalf of the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.

Ernest Kumi’s death occurred a few months after he was sworn in as the MP for Akwatia following a difficult court battle.

His victory in the 2024 Parliamentary elections was challenged in court by the losing National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Yiadom Boakye.

In February 2025, a Koforidua High Court found Kumi guilty of contempt after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing in as an MP.

The court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court's authority.

Kumi later won a victory at the Supreme Court, but his supporters claimed the legal battle took a toll on him and left him stressed.
