Jerry Rawlings and John Kufuor’s bitter past

Zanetor’s father, former President Jerry John Rawlings, was a bitter political rival of the 86-year-old Kufuor.

Rawlings founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party and led the party to win two terms as President between 1993 and 2001.

His second term was a showdown between himself and Kufuor, who led the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 1996 elections.

Rawlings won the election, but Kufuor ended up succeeding him as President in 2001 after he defeated Rawlings’ hand-picked successor, Vice President John Evans Atta Mills.

The two feuded over the next eight years as Rawlings expressed concern throughout the country about his successor. Kufuor also slammed Rawlings as a dictatorial leader who imprisoned his political opponents throughout his career.
