NPP's Chairman Wontumi to be Charged as Police CID and EOCO Conclude Investigations
- Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine says Chairman Wontumi will be prosecuted over alleged galamsey activities

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, will be hauled before the court to answer to his alleged crimes against the state.
Taking his turn at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 28, 2025, Dr Ayine stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) have concluded investigations relating to the NPP's regional chairman's case.

He also said that the charges against Chairman Wontumi have been finalised, adding that he would soon be arraigned before the court to answer to the accusations against him over his alleged involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Aside from the Chairman Wontumi case, the Attorney General also disclosed that investigations against the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Buffer Stock Company (CEO), Mr Abdul Wahab Hanan, have also been completed.
"The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has completed investigations in respect of Chairman Wontumi and the former National Buffer Stock Company CEO, Mr Abdul Wahab Hanan, and their accomplices," he said.
"The results of both investigations will be announced very soon. The Police CID have also completed the docket on the Akonta Mining case and submitted the same to my office," he added.

Chairman Wontumi detained by EOCO
Heavily armed officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) raided Chairman Wontumi’s Kumasi residence on May 23, 2025, with a search warrant.
However, a group of NPP supporters in the Ashanti Region gathered at the scene to oppose the operation.
Chairman Wontumi later reported voluntarily to the CID headquarters in Accra on 26 May 2025, accompanied by his legal representatives.

Media reports stated that he was cautioned and granted bail, with a directive to return on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, to aid further investigations.
Upon his return, EOCO operatives arrested him for more questioning, with reports linking the arrest to an alleged $55 million fraud involving his firm, Akonta Mining.
He was subsequently granted bail on Monday, June 2, 2025, after his lawyers met his bail conditions.
The controversial politician, who is an NPP bigwig has for the longest time been linked to galamsey through his firm, Akonta mining.
Chairman Wontumi returns to EOCO
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that Chairman Wontumi reported back to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
After spending six days in EOCO custody, the Ashanti Regional Chairman made his first public appearance on Tuesday, June 3.
