Mahama Announces Government's Plans to Revive Ghana's National Airline

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to revive Ghana's national airline, several decades after the country's flag carrier, Ghana Airways, ceased operations.
During a courtesy visit from Portugal's Ambassador, Maria Da Conceicao de Sousa Pilar, to present her Letters of Credence, President Mahama encouraged potential partnerships with Portuguese airlines.

"We appreciate the fact that the Portuguese national airline flies directly to Accra, and so, that improves people-to-people relationships... Ghana itself is trying to re-establish our national airline and at the appropriate time we would be looking for partners. Maybe if the Portuguese national airline is interested, we could do a partnership," he said.
This move is part of broader efforts to re-establish Ghana's aviation industry, with plans to reopen the expression of interest process to invite competent and established partners.
Strengthening Ghana's economic relationship with Portugal
President Mahama also said Ghana was interested in expanding its economic relationship with the southern European country.
He said they believed Ghana could attract more investors, highlighting the country’s abundance of natural resources, land, and water suitable for agriculture, agribusiness, mining, oil, and gas.
President Mahama explained that there were many opportunities, noting Ghana’s market size of nearly 35 million people and the added advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which offered access to a market of 1.3 billion people across Africa.
"We believe that we can attract more investors to come and invest in Ghana. Ghana has a lot of natural resources, land, and water for agriculture, agribusiness, mining, oil, and gas. I mean, there are so many opportunities, with a market size of almost 35 million people. And with the African Continental Free Trade Area, it is possible to reach a market size of 1.3 billion people in Africa," he said.

The President added that strengthening economic ties and encouraging more Portuguese businesspeople to invest in Ghana would be mutually beneficial, particularly by creating job opportunities for the country's youth.
"So, we believe that forging stronger economic ties and inviting more Portuguese businesspeople to come and do business in Ghana will be a win-win, especially in terms of creating employment opportunities for our young people," the President added.

Ghana Airways plane turned into restaurant
Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that the Ghana Airways plane that had been transformed into a restaurant reportedly closed down after operating for about ten years.
The aircraft, which had been converted into the La Tante DC10 Restaurant, was seen being towed away as onlookers watched.
The plane was previously a defunct passenger jet that operated between 1983 and 2005.
The La Tante DC-10 Restaurant was located opposite the Marina Shopping Mall in Accra.
