Former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong passed away in the tragic Ghana Army helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofum in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was among eight individuals whose lives ended in the unfortunate incident.

Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, and Former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye were among the victims of the tragic helicopter crash.

Army personnel Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also tragically passed away.

The late Dr Samuel Sarpong, who previously served as the Mayor of Kumasi, was travelling with the other victims to the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi.

Their tragic demise has devastated Ghanaians, including President John Dramani Mahama, who suspended all his scheduled activities and programmes for the rest of the week.

The president also declared three days of mourning for the helicopter crash victims, starting from Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Samuel Sarpong's wife weeps after his demise

Following his tragic passing, footage of Samuel Sarpong's wife in an emotional state at their residence has emerged on social media.

In the video shared by Kumasi-based radio station Akoma FM, the former Ashanti Regional Minister's widow was inconsolable as she mourned her late husband.

The elderly-looking woman screamed in agony as she called on God to help her deal with her significant loss.

The late Samuel Sarpong's friends, family, and church colleagues had visited the residence in the Ashanti Region to commiserate with the widow.
