News of the demise of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has thrown the nation into a state of sorrow.
The outspoken New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP was admired by many for his eloquence and expressiveness.

Adom TV, in honouring his memory, has posted a video believed to be Ernest Yaw Kumi’s last interview, where he appeared as a panellist on the Badwam show just three days ago on Friday, July 4, 2025.
The video shows him expressing frustration over the Electoral Commission’s delay in bringing finality to the disputed Ablekuma North constituency.
Ernest Yaw Kumi, who spoke with great energy and passion and showed no signs of ill health, strongly emphasised the struggles he went through in his quest to cement his position as MP for his constituency.
The video, which has garnered over 200 likes, was captioned:
"Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi passes on. Last featured on Badwam, July 4, 2025. Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akwatia constituency in the Eastern Region, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has reportedly passed away. Details surrounding his death remain unclear, but news of his untimely demise broke on Monday, July 7, 2025."

He was 40 years old at the time of his passing.
The Adisadel College alumnus, a first-time MP on the ticket of the NPP, overcame several hurdles after he overturned a contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
This came after a Koforidua High Court, in February 2025, issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court’s authority.
Bawumia mourns Ernest Kumi
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has also joined the list of dignitaries mourning the demise of Ernest Kumi.
The presidential aspirant visited the family on Tuesday to sympathise with them over the passing of the NPP stalwart.
Sharing a few words, Bawumia, in a video sighted by YEN.com.gh on the YouTube page of Channel One TV, described Ernest Yaw Kumi as a dear friend and said he was still struggling to come to terms with his passing.
“Ernest was my friend, and I have always supported him, even during his election as MP for Akwatia. Nobody in Parliament supported me more than Ernest; he has always supported me.
Just this past Friday, I was with him at my house, and we had a good chat. Hearing this beats my mind because, on that day, nothing about him showed that he was ill or sick. I am still struggling to wrap my head around the fact that he has passed,” he said.
Brother opens up on Ernest Kumi's demise
The brother of Ernest Yaw Kumi has gone public about the final moments of the late MP.
In an interview with UTV, the young man, amidst tears, said the MP was rushed to the hospital in the early hours of July 7 after complaining of chest pain.
He said the MP died at the hospital after doctors informed the family that he was not responding to treatment
“He travelled and arrived this morning. When he returned, he complained of chest pain and was taken to the Lister Hospital. He was given a drip, but it was noticed that the fluid wasn’t flowing. Later, his wife was told that the NPP MP was not responding to treatment and had died.”
MPs sympathise with family of Ernest Kumi
Members of Parliament have also expressed sorrow over the passing of their late colleague.
In a show of solidarity, the MPs paid a visit to the family of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi to sympathise with them in these difficult moments.
The delegation included MPs from both the Minority and Majority, including the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and his Minority counterpart, Mahama Ayariga.
