A Ghanaian woman is in disbelief after finding out that thieves had stolen her electricity meter, leaving her without power.

The wires connecting the meter were cut, but there was no sign of forced entry, suggesting that the theft had been carried out discreetly, possibly overnight.
The incident prompted a public outcry over the security of the country’s electricity infrastructure, as the disgruntled woman claimed that ECG officials who installed the meter had assured her that it was tamper-proof and could not be easily stolen.
ECG replaces old meters with new ones
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) began issuing new smart prepaid meters in November 2022, with installations starting in the Volta Region, specifically in the Ho and Hohoe Municipalities. Approximately 5,000 units were installed in these areas, marking the initial phase of the nationwide rollout.

Following this, ECG expanded the initiative to other regions, including the Western Region, where 40,000 new prepaid meters were installed in July 2023.
In March 2024, the Accra West Region commenced the replacement of over 450,000 meters, including post-paid, non-smart prepaid, and faulty meters, with MMS-compliant smart prepaid meters.
The Ashanti East Region followed suit in December 2024, replacing outdated prepaid and post-paid meters with the new smart meters in the Manhyia District of Kumasi.
ECG claimed the new meters are designed to provide precise readings, addressing issues associated with older, mechanical meters that led to revenue losses, but some Ghanaians disagree. Many have complained of excessive billings caused by the new meters.
