Murtala Mohammed’s Widow Remembers His Dedication to Mahama: “I Was Sharing Him With the President”

Hadiatu, the widow of Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, delivered a moving tribute to her husband’s commitment to President John Mahama and public service.
She described her late husband as a man whose presence was a gift to all who knew him during his state funeral on August 15 at the Independence Square.

“For almost a decade, I had the privilege of walking through life by his side. Together, we raised our beautiful children, and in every step of that journey, he showed me and everyone around him what it means to be kind, patient, and full of love.”
Despite their bond, she acknowledged that she was competing with his role in the Mahama administration.
“I remember once, an incident on the road. Of course, he was the first person I called. He picked up right away, and I told him my situation, expecting him to come rushing to my rescue.
"He listened patiently, sympathised, and then said, Ah my dear, the president has called me.’ In that moment, I realised I wasn’t just sharing my husband with friends, family, or the community. I was sharing him with the President of Ghana as well!!”
Nonetheless, she said Muhammed balanced his role in public service and his role as a father.
Muhammed’s widow was accompanied to the funeral by her mother and other family members.

They were travelling to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme when the chopper crashed into a dense forest about two hours from the destination.
The other deaths were former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru and National Democratic Congress Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, while the air force personnel who died in the crash were Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala and Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu.
Sam George says internet shutdown was considered
YEN.com.gh also recently reported that the Minister for Communications faced criticism after stating he had considered an internet shutdown to halt the circulation of videos from the crash site.
George, however, admitted that there would have been a negative ripple effect that would be much worse. Online criticism has been rife after footage of the remains of the eight victims circulated widely on social media.
