Head Pastor's Kids Among the Dead in Tragic Saviour Church of Ghana Crash on Accra-Kumasi Road

Two of the Saviour Church of Ghana's head pastor's children were among the dead in the tragic road crash on July 28 that claimed 15 lives.

The crash on the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway also left four others wounded after a vehicle collided with a tanker.

A church elder, Kofi Baah, told Adom News that the group was returning from a youth event when the crash happened.

“We rushed to the Yawkwei Steward Hospital after hearing the news, only to find out our beloved members had passed away."

The crash involved a collision between the vehicle carrying the church members and a truck transporting fuel.

Reports from eyewitnesses indicate that a tyre on the tanker burst, causing the vehicle to swerve off its lane and crash into the church members' vehicle.

Emergency response teams from the Juaso Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), Ambulance Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service from Konongo and Juaso responded swiftly to the scene to attend to the casualties in the crash, who were aged between four and 21 years.

Notable road crashes on Accra-Kumasi road

The Accra-Kumasi road has become notorious for the spate of road crashes that have occurred on it.

On June 25, a collision between a VIP bus and a cargo truck on the Accra-Kumasi Highway claimed several lives and left dozens hospitalised.

According to reports, the bus collided with an oncoming cargo truck loaded with flour.

In April 2025, at least 11 persons were confirmed dead following a road crash at Amanase, near Suhum, along the Accra-Kumasi Highway, in the Eastern Region.

Preliminary police reports at the time indicated that the fuel tanker driver veered off his lane into the path of the oncoming bus.

The head-on collision claimed the lives of two women and nine men on impact. Several others sustained life-threatening injuries.

In December 2024, seven people died and several others were injured following a head-on collision between a VIP bus and a Sprinter bus at Atwedie on the Kumasi-Accra highway.

Increase in Ghana's road crashes in 2025

YEN.com.gh also previously reported that road crashes had increased year on year in 2025, according to the National Road Safety Authority.

Ghana recorded 7,289 road crashes and 1,504 fatalities between January and June 2025, compared to 1,237 deaths in the first half of 2024.
