Chairman Wontumi Charged With Galamsey-Related Offenses, Granted Bail By CID

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, the New Patriotic Party Ashanti Region Chairman, has been charged with illegal mining-related offences.
Boasiako spoke to the press after being granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department.

"The charge they have put on me is that I am engaged in galamsey.”
Boasiako said he has produced his mining license and denied mining in forest reserves.
He said he told the police to present evidence of the illegal mining in the forests.
Ghanaians found guilty of varying illegal mining offences face between 15 years and 25 years in prison.
On Friday, May 23, 2025, national security operatives stormed Boasiako's residence in Kumasi to execute a search warrant. They were unable to gain access to the residence.

Godfred Dame leads Chairman Wontumi's legal team.
YEN.com.gh reported that Boasiako's legal team is being led by former Attorney General Godfred Dame, who accompanied him to the police.
He was also accompanied by the former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
