Ghanaian rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has opened up on the reason why he released a gospel song with Obaapa Christy titled Odeneho.

The two artists, one from the gospel genre and one from rap, stirred attention on social media after announcing an upcoming joint collaboration.
News of the partnership of opposing genres generated excitement, particularly in light of the never-ending debate about secular music and gospel music that dominates discussions on social media.

Obaapa Christy launches album with Sarkodie single
On 30th July, 2025, gospel icon Obaapa Christy launched her 15th studio album, Odeneho, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The album launch also served as a live release party for the lead single, Odeneho, which featured hiplife great Sarkodie.
Obaapa Christy’s Odeneho album launch was attended by numerous prominent personalities from the entertainment industry, including highlife great Kwabena Kwabena, skitmaker Dr Likee, and gospel singer Bro Sammy.
Other attendees included former musician and current Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central A Plus, media personality and musician Andy Dosty, gospel singer Joyce Blessing, media personality Mike 2, and others.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) politician Sammi Awuku, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and MP for Akuapim North, was also in attendance.
Obaapa Christy capped off the night’s festivities by delivering a captivating rap performance of Sarkodie’s verse on their collaboration, Odeneho.

Sarkodie speaks on Obaapa Christy Odeneho collaboration
Following the release of the single, Sarkodie has opened up on why he agreed to the collaboration.
In a post shared on his Twitter handle on Thursday, July 31, 2025, he praised Obaapa Christy for the success of her career and album release.

He described himself as a fan of her work and said appearing on a song with her had been a long held wish.
“Been a fan for the longest and now I get to share the mic with my beautiful sister The one and only Obaapa Christy !!! One box ticked off my bucket list !!!! Amazing song on an amazing new project #Odeneho,” he wrote.

Speaking to YEN.com.gh, international marketing expert Emmanuel Bonney, the founder of Bekofi Creative Hub, praised Sarkodie and Obaapa Christy for transcending genres to create something new, even though some fans might resist the crossover.
"The Sarkodie–Obaapa Christy collabo is a smart move that brings different fans together. It celebrates gospel music, and gives it a fresh feel - even though some traditional gospel or rap fans might have mixed feelings about it." Bonney said.

Sarkodie to host Rapperholic in Kumasi
Previously, YEN.com.gh reported that Sarkodie announced plans to host a historic Rapperholic concert in Kumasi.
In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Sarkodie announced the date and venue and debuted the artwork for the concert.
Sarkodie’s post sparked massive excitement online, with many fans from Kumasi and beyond expressing their eagerness to attend the concert.
