Ghanaians in Reading in the United Kingdom held a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the late Ghanaian highlife musician Daddy Lumba.

Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, died on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.

According to reports, he fell ill earlier on that day and was transported to the hospital from his East Legon residence.

Despite life-saving efforts, Daddy Lumba passed away at the age of 61.

His family confirmed the tragedy in a statement announcing the huge loss to the nation.

"With profound sorrow and deep grief, the Fosu family announces the passing of Ghana's beloved musical icon, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away earlier today, Saturday, July 26, 2025, after a short illness," the statement read.

It continued by reflecting on Lumba’s legacy in relation to Ghanaian music.

"Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives. His soulful voice provided the soundtrack to our love stories, and his poignant lyrics captured the poetry of our struggles, dreams, and resilience," it added.

Lumba is survived by two wives, Akosua Serwaa and Priscilla Ofori Atta, also known as Odo Broni.

According to his family, he left behind eleven children - three with Akosua Serwaa, six with Odo Broni and two more with other women.

On the evening of Monday, August 18, Ghanaians based in Reading in the United Kingdom held a candlelight vigil in his honour.

A video from the ceremony showed the venue, the Mr Cod Restaurant at Shinfield Road in Reading, being prepared for the night’s events.

The grounds were decorated with balloons and a large portrait of Daddy Lumba with a banner.

The banner had the inscription “Daddy Lumba's Reading Lifetime Celebration 2025. Your legacy lives on.”

Another video showed attendees at the solemn ceremony wearing Daddy Lumba t-shirts with candles in hand as they sang along to Makra Mo.

Attendees looked sad as they paid tribute to the highlife great.
