The “Obi Ate Me Bo” hitmaker’s passing has sparked nationwide conversations and has now reached the floor of Parliament.
The Parliament of Ghana, reacting to his demise, described Daddy Lumba as a true legend who greatly influenced the Ghanaian music scene. In tribute, some Members of Parliament (MPs) sang their favourite songs by the late veteran musician.
Daddy Lumba was one of Ghana’s most respected and celebrated musicians, and his death has only elevated his iconic status. He is expected to be given a state burial by the Government of Ghana.
Daddy Lumba's music transcends political affiliations
During the parliamentary tribute, one MP made a subtle jab at the majority caucus by referencing Lumba’s song “Yɛ Ne Wo Sere Kwa,” suggesting that the majority merely smile on the surface but lack sincerity.
Another MP said “Theresa” was her favourite Daddy Lumba song, while a third stated:
“If you’re sad, play Daddy Lumba’s music and you’ll feel better. If you’re quarrelling with your wife, play his music and peace will follow. If you’re tempted to engage in illegal mining (galamsey), his songs will encourage you to stop."
"Even if you don’t have money for your wife, just play ‘Medo Wasem Bebree’ and she’ll understand. As for Daddy Lumba, if you’re a young man trying to make it in life, just keep playing his music.”
A minority MP also sang “Nana Is A Winner,” a campaign song, stating that his favourite part was the line, “Kukrudu NPP.” Another MP ended the tribute by singing “Akwanoma.”
